“Baylee is a typical middle schooler until an accident happens during a softball game that leaves her legally blind. “B” is for Baylee by Kay M. Bates shares Baylee’s story from that moment on. Baylee has a loving and supportive family that helps her navigate the tricky line between dependence and independence. Back in middle school, Baylee now must learn how to read Braille and take notes with the help of a computer. She also must deal with the loss of some friends and learning to trust new ones. Softball is no longer an option for her, but her history teacher suggests that maybe she could try out for the track team. With her brother Sam’s help, she learns how to run the hurdles. Will she be able to truly compete?

“B” is for Baylee is a captivating read. Kay M. Bates has done an amazing job detailing the frustrations and challenges that people who are blind must deal with. Baylee’s wide range of emotions from hopefulness to frustration seems completely authentic. Kids will be impressed with Baylee’s resilience and her bravery in being willing to try a new sport with her limited vision. Equally as impressive is her willingness to listen to advice and to forgive. I was totally immersed in this book and couldn’t wait to find out what happens to Baylee. “B” is for Baylee is a book that middle schoolers will enjoy. Hopefully, they will also gain some empathy for their fellow students along the way.”
