Jim Moehlenbrock‘s A Budget Traveler’s Daily Journal of His Solo Adventures through Asia is a thought-provoking rethink of what a good travel book can really be. By taking a refreshingly authentic approach to his writing, Moehlenbrock invites you into the world of a solo traveler. It’s one full of excitement, trepidation, and those human moments that can be all too fleeting if you confine yourself to the status quo. Here’s what the man behind the book had to say on how his writing and travels intertwined with one another to produce the finished piece.

“What I really wanted to do was to share my actual daily journal showing how interesting traveling solo can truly be. Not only did I meet the local welcoming people, some telling me I was the first American they had ever met, but I also met some other very interesting travelers. One solo traveler was going across Asia on a motorcycle, whereas another one would work for six months in Australia and then travel solo for a year and then do the same thing again, working another six months and traveling for another year.”

Fascinating stuff, and what about the way it all came together?

“I never really set out to turn this into a book – I just used journalling as a form of companionship when traveling solo. While I love the freedom and liberation you experience, when you immerse yourself in a new culture where you don’t speak the language it’s really important to still make time for yourself. Journalling is what offered me this sanctuary if you will, and it’s through the words I put down on the page that I feel the regions and areas of the world I had the pleasure of exploring can be best presented to a wider audience. Hopefully the result is an authentic and honest portrait of a solo traveler, and one that will give others the confidence, belief, and motivation they need to go out there into the world and carve out their own path.”

And what’s the one thing he would like to leave the reader with?

“These were not ordinary people. They were special and that’s what this daily journal is about – meeting and enjoying the people.”
